For the Joy of Kosugi
Kosugi Chapel was started with a vision to share God's grace with many people and to be a church filled with joy that only God can give. We pray that we can be a gathering of people who worship a great God with thanks and joy.
Please read on for an introduction to the beginning of the church, what we believe as a church (our statement of faith), and our chapel's staff church planting missionary profile.

Our Story
教会の始まり
At the end of March 2020, Kevin and Kaori Laverman, currently leading Kosugi Chapel, moved into Kosugi Joy House. The Lavermans had been working in church planting (starting new churches) mainly in the Mizonokuchi area of Takatsu Ward, Kawasaki City for about 20 years. We had a heart desire to start a new church in the Musashi Kosugi area, too. Immediately after their move to Kosugi, the covid-19 pandemic began. Since no new church gatherings or ministries could be begun during that period, we focused instead on using Zoom for Sunday Worship services and Bible studies, walking and praying for the community, and preparing for future post-covid work to begin. In April 2024, the Lavermans launched Kosugi Chapel with such programs as “Joyful Kids Choir” (kids gospel), “Joyful English Cafe,” and a small group Bible Study. We have many ideas for the future to be a church that serves the needs of our community. Through this activity, we hope to build connection with many people and share the great joy of the gospel seen at the cross of Jesus Christ, and the great love and grace of God’s blessing and work in our lives. We look forward to seeing God’s family grow as we gather together as a church for fellowship, worship, and prayer for God’s direction our future.

Our Faith
私たちが信じていること
Kosugi Chapel’s Statement of Faith is a summary of what we believe by faith in Jesus Christ as our Savior. It is not innovative or liberal theology, but rooted in traditional Protestant evangelical theology based on solid biblical teachings.
Our faith is based solely on the Word of God. While there are matters of faith understood differently among denominations, as a church we identify with the Conservative Baptist Association in Japan. Our beliefs are centered on the gospel of Jesus Christ as our Savior as revealed in the Bible. In areas where the Bible is less clear, we leave to individual conscience and the guidance of the Holy Spirit. We have summarized our statement of faith regarding the Bible, God, Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit, Man, Salvation, the Church, and Eternity. You can read this summary statement of faith in the below PDF file. Our Faith Statement.pdf
Our Profile
小杉チャペル開拓宣教師
Hello, we’re Kevin & Kaori LAVERMAN. Nice to meet you! I (Kevin) was born and raised in the suburbs of Chicago, Illinois (USA) and my wife (Kaori) was born and raised in Yamagata, Tohoku, surrounded by beautiful mountains. Since we were very young, both of us have lived our lives believing in Jesus Christ as our Savior. We are from very distant places, but through God’s wonderful plan, we met, married, and were sent to Japan by WorldVenture as missionaries. For the last 25 years, we have been “church planting” to establish new gospel-centered and growing churches. At the end of March 2020, we moved into Musashi Kosugi (“Kosugi Joy House”). From April 2024, Kosugi Chapel started its activities in for the joy of this community. Our family hopes to get to know and become friends with many people, enjoy sharing the good things about Japan and America together, and also share the love and grace and gospel truth in the Bible. We love animals (especially cats), coffee, music, good movies. And of course we love to talk together, sing together, and pray together with others.
